Ant-Man 3 Director Teases Surprising MCU Cameos In Quantumania

Director Peyton Reed teases surprise MCU cameos in Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania. In the upcoming third film, Paul Rudd and Evangeline Lilly will reprise their superhero roles for the first time since the end of the Infinity Saga. Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, will find the pair going up against Kang the Conqueror (Jonathan Majors), whose variant, He Who Remains, was first introduced in the Loki series.

As the third film in the Ant-Man franchise, Marvel Studios is going bigger for Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania. After playing an integral part in the Avengers: Endgame time heist thanks to Hank Pym's Quantum Tunnel, the film will finally delve further into the Quantum Realm. This will be part of the franchise's exploration of the multiverse in the Multiverse Saga. Given this, Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania sounds like it will be fully taking advantage of the situation with regard to including many fun cameos in the movie.

Speaking with Access on the heels of Marvel Studios' Hall H panel at San Diego Comic-Con 2022, Reed hyped up Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania's fun tone. The filmmaker then hinted at "some surprising faces" that the heroes may encounter in the Quantum Realm. For starters, the film's footage already featured Bill Murray in an unknown role and Reed is teasing more. Read his full quote below:

“Oh yes, there’s great fun in store for everyone and some surprising faces that may show up in the Quantum Realm. So yes, we’re very excited.”

Paul Rudd as Ant-Man and Jonathan Majors as Kang

Interestingly, Marvel Studios boss Kevin Feige compared Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania to Doctor Strange 2 in the sense that both are team-up films. As the Avengers films in the Multiverse Saga function now as culminating events, the franchise needs smaller crossover projects to cap off their Phases and that's what those aforementioned movies are. Aside from that, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness was also chock-full of cameos as it fully took advantage of its ability to utilize variants with very little impact in the Sacred Timeline. Given this, it's curious if Reed's comment is an implication that his threequel will also follow suit in this regard. After all, since the Quantum Realm is an entirely different space from the main MCU, it can also feature many characters that ultimately won't have any bearing on the franchise's canon.

Over the years, the Ant-Man franchise has become integral to MCU's overall storytelling. After the original film's self-contained narrative, Ant-Man and the Wasp directly led to Avengers: Endgame and made the time heist possible. Now, Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania is expected to be the same as it debuts the Multiverse Saga's real big bad — Kang the Conqueror. Reed previously mentioned that the events of the film will permanently change the MCU and that could very well be the case. On top of that, it could also lean into fan service by bringing character variants and seeing them interact with Team Ant-Man. Otherwise, it could feature other characters who are also dealing with the multiverse like Loki, the TVA, and even Doctor Strange and Clea.
