A new behind-the-scenes image from Clerks III shows writer/director Kevin Smith planning a rooftop hockey game. The upcoming comedy serves as the long-awaited sequel to Smith's 1994 original and its 2006 follow-up, which focus primarily on two convenience store (then later fast-food restaurant) employees in New Jersey. After a rather long development process, the director began teasing details from the latest installment last year. He revealed that Clerks III would be in black and white and color, a combination of both prior films' styles. He also shared that it will revisit Quick Stop Groceries and follow Randal Graves as he plans to make a movie with Dante Hicks after surviving a heart attack.SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY
Set to be released theatrically on September 13, 2022, Clerks III will see the return of Jeff Anderson and Brian O'Halloran as Randal and Dante respectively, in addition to other series stars Jason Mewes, Trevor Fehrman, Rosario Dawson, Marilyn Ghigliotti, and Smith himself as Silent Bob. Smith, aware of the original film's cult following and the overall support of the series, has been actively keeping fans up to date on the new project through social media since he first confirmed its reprisal back in 2019. The official trailer for Clerks III dropped just a few days ago and reintroduces fans to familiar sights and characters. Notably, it features a glimpse at a hockey game on top of the Quick Stop, reminding some of a classic scene from the 1994 film.

Now, Smith has taken to Twitter to share a behind-the-scenes photo of himself, along with cinematographer Learan Kahanov, planning the Clerks III hockey scene. He reveals that the image was taken on a hot day, on top of the store, as the two of them tried to figure out the best way to shoot the game. Check out Smith's post below:
This is me & Cinematographer @LKDPnyc on top of Quick Stop on what was an over-100 degree day as we tried to figure out the best way to shoot the rooftop hockey game (edited to The Black Parade by @MCRofficial)! Smith's engagement with fans when it comes to Clerks seems to be appreciated, and the lasting admiration for the films, the first of which premiered almost three decades ago, suggests that the new installment could be another success. The director recently spoke about the longevity of Clerks, sharing that he could not understand why people liked it so much initially. He eventually realized, though, that the 1994 original can connect with so many audiences because most people have worked a lousy job before.
The charm of Clerks can be attributed to any number of things, but there is no denying that audiences have embraced its setting and characters over the years, resulting in a level of popularity that even Smith himself found hard to believe at first. So it should be reassuring that so much of the original cast wanted to come back and revisit the now-famous Quick Stop Groceries. Smith devotees looking forward to seeing what the series does next, including how the rooftop hockey scene plays out, will have to wait to see Clerks III when it hits theaters this fall.
