Every Marvel Project You Should Watch Before The "I Am Groot" Series

The Disney+ I Am Groot series premiered on the platform on August 10. Fans could not be more ecstatic to be reintroduced to everyone's favorite version of Groot. Baby Groot was last seen in Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 2, who stole the show, but subsequent appearances showed Groot as a teenager. It looks like I Am Groot is meant to be a bridge between the appearances, while also providing important context for more recent incarnations of the character. Also, possibly, it's meant to just be utterly adorable.

With only three words under his belt and a knack for getting into minor (or major) trouble, this miniseries has the potential to be one of Marvel's most interesting character studies yet. It also allows a greater focus to be placed on animation as well, showcasing how a character that only says three words can be so impactful. With that in mind, naturally, as the show is set to air in just a few short days, here is a list of Marvel movies that fans should watch in order to reacclimatize themselves to the various different characters and personas of Groot in preparation for the series.

5 Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 1

While Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 1 does not introduce fans to the beloved baby Groot, it is a well-rounded introduction to adult Groot as well as many of the motivations that surround Groot as a personality. For one, the movie teaches the fans that while a living organism may not display great strength or tenacity, it can still show love and courage when confronting problems and people.

Adult Groot throughout this movie was able to embody a complete character arc, and morph into the baby Groot showcased in other projects, all while setting up the development of the Groot species, something fans might not have been privy too.

4 Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 2

The fans introduction to the adorable baby Groot came in Guardian of the Galaxy Volume 2 where Groot was shown a few years after the events of Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 1. While the first Guardians movie gave fans the matured Groot character, this movie directly opposed the first, by showcasing a more naive character, learning the ins and outs of the world and how he fits into the already formed MCU team.

While this Groot character seems almost useless in this movie, he serves as a character that has endless opportunity for growth and is someone fans can watch grow up throughout the Marvel movies. This type of character gives fans an age progression, something that has been lacking in the MCU until the Guardians movies.

3 Avengers: Infinity War

Acting as a teenager in this movie, Groot serves a vital, yet annoying role in the first part of this two-part Avengers film series. During this film, fans are exposed to the development that Groot has undergone between the second Guardians movie till now, and also the more stereotypical teenager attitude that was quite unique to be seen in a tree.

This movie begins to touch on the humanity fans saw within Groot in Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 1 as Groot is able to sacrifice his own limbs to help another person, quite paralleling the action of adult Groot in the first Guardians movie. Here fans see the bridge between the cute new character of baby Groot and the already developed and addressed character of adult Groot.

2 Avengers: Endgame

After being blipped in Avengers:Infinity War, Groot comes back stronger than ever, being able to contribute in a meaningful way towards the efforts of the Avengers. While fans were exposed to the extent of Groot powers in the Infinity War, it was short-lived. In this movie, however, fans not only looked forward to seeing Groot's new and improved powers, but also, by the end, fans were excited to see Groot back with the Guardians squad, setting up another movie.

This movie provides a great stepping off point for Groot's character as a whole. It allows fans to receive a taste of Groot's potential, in terms of his powers and his maturity, as well as learning more about Groot's future and how he will play a role in the next Guardians volume.

1 Thor Love and Thunder

While Groot's screen time in this movie was short, it was sweet and it gave fans the opportunity to look forward to the I am Groot series as well as Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 3. This movie truly showcased how fast the Groot species matures and adapts. In comparison to Avengers: Infinity War, this version of Groot is, yes, still a teenager and maintains the attitude he held in the third Avengers installment, but he also displays the characterization of a more well-rounded character.

By the time this movie aired, fans were not only ready to relive the glory days of baby Groot in anticipation of the new series, but were anxious about the future of Groot, in what seems to be the last installment of the Guardians of the Galaxy.
