I Am Groot Creator Weighs in on Baby Groot vs Baby Yoda Debate

The creator of the I Am Groot series has weighed in on the Baby Groot vs. Baby Yoda debate. The recently released series of animated shorts I Am Groot follows the solo misadventures of Baby Groot (voiced by Vin Diesel), a tree-like alien prominent in the MCU's Guardians of the Galaxy films. The series gives viewers a peek at what the little sapling gets up to in between the events of Guardians of the Galaxy and one of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2's mid-credits scenes.

While Baby Groot has become the MCU's most famous baby, Grogu - colloquially referred to as Baby Yoda - has garnered his own fame since his debut in the Star Wars live-action series The Mandalorian. Grogu is an infant member of the same unnamed species as Yoda and Yaddle who, like his predecessors, also has a strong ability in the Force. Appearing in nearly every episode of The Mandalorian and a few episodes of The Book of Boba Fett, Grogu has received plenty of positive reception and attention from fans, becoming a pop culture sensation and leading to a wave of merchandise, memes, fan art, and more.

The similarities between Groot and Grogu have led to a debate among audiences about who might come out on top in a supposed brawl. Now, the creator of I Am Groot, Kirsten Lepore, and executive producer and head of streaming for Marvel Studios Brad Winderbaum talk to Variety about how the two tykes compare. Lepore and Winderbaum are faced with the big question of who would win in a fight: Baby Yoda or Baby Groot. Read their full responses below:

Lepore: "Oh Baby Groot, for sure. He’s a fighter."

Winderbaum: "And he’ll fight dirty too."

With comparisons between Baby Groot and Baby Yoda cropping up ever since Grogu's debut, it's no shocker that the creator of I Am Groot would be asked to comment on the debate, nor that she would side with her character. Many have made arguments for each franchise baby, with SNL even featuring a Baby Yoda vs. Baby Groot skit. Audiences are enamored with the two characters, but there are others who have a harsher viewpoint. In contrast to Lepore and Winderbaum, the director of Gremlins, Joe Dante, recently shared his claim that Grogu is an outright copy of his film's Gizmo, although Grogu is just a baby version of Yoda, who was created and existed before the Gremlins films.

Looks-wise, between Baby Groot and Baby Yoda, a clear winner can't be chosen, as it's obviously more of a personal preference. As the two exist in separate franchises, a winner can't officially be crowned, but it is entertaining to imagine them duking it out. Baby Yoda is a Force-sensitive Jedi youngling who trained briefly with Luke Skywalker. He can use the Force to deflect, heal, lift and defend. On the other hand, Baby Groot's range is pretty limited, especially compared to his adult predecessor. While a mature Groot is seemingly ever-growing, nearly indestructible, and self-sacrificing, Baby Groot is simply Baby Groot, albeit with an excellent battle cry. Still, maybe I Am Groot's version of the character is suited to take on someone closer to his own size. After all, as Winderbaum said, "he'll fight dirty too."
