Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 4 Vs. Flip 3: All The New Features & Upgrades

Samsung recently launched the Galaxy Z Flip 4, and at first glance, the smartphone looks identical to the Galaxy Z Flip 3 launched last year. However, it comes with quite a lot of improvements and a couple of new features as well. The Galaxy Z Flip 4 could easily be the most easily foldable in the coming year due to the success of the Flip 3. In 2021, Samsung sold approximately seven million Flip units, which is a testament to the popularity of the clamshell smartphone.

The Galaxy Z Flip 4 was released alongside three other products at the Galaxy Unpacked event. First, the company revealed Galaxy Buds 2 Pro, the genuinely wireless stereos that compete with Apple AirPods Pro. Second, the South Korean conglomerate released Galaxy Watch 5 and Watch 5 Pro with better battery life. Last but not least, the Galaxy Z Fold 4 was also unveiled at the event.

IP Rating ExplainedSamsung's latest clamshell phone, the Galaxy Z Flip 4, comes with several upgrades, improving on the most popular folding phone of 2021, the Galaxy Z Flip 3. Some subtle yet important changes in the design include a slimmer hinge and straightened edges that make Flip 4 Samsung's most refined Flip yet. The primary display on both smartphones might look similar. Still, Flip 4's 6.7-inch FHD+ Dynamic AMOLED 2x display can bring the refresh rate down to 1Hz, optimizing the viewing experience and saving battery simultaneously. Further, the Flip 4 has slimmer bezels, giving it a modern look. The secondary display on both smartphones is a 1.9-inch Super AMOLED display locked at 60Hz. The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 4 comes with a faster Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 SoC, which is about 30 percent faster than the Snapdragon 888 5G on the Flip 3. Additionally, since the new processor is built on 4nm architecture vs. 5nm on the old, it consumes less power, which gives the Flip 4's battery life an extra push.

Speaking of battery life, the latest flipper from Samsung comes with an 11 percent larger 3,700 mAh battery, which is a substantial improvement over the last iteration. In addition, the Flip 4 supports faster 25W wired charging as opposed to 15W wired charging on the Flip 3, which can charge up to 50 percent in around 30 minutes. As far as storage is concerned, Samsung has increased the maximum capacity from 256GB on the Flip 3 to 512GB on the Flip 4, although RAM remains the same at 8GB.

Users get a 12MP (f/1.8) primary camera with Dual Pixel AF and optical image stabilization. The secondary and the selfie camera on the Flip 4 is a 12MP (f/2.2) and 10MP (f/2.4).

Though the cameras on the Flip 4 are the same as those on the Flip 3, users will be able to click better pictures with the Flip 4 as its primary sensor has a larger pixel size and is 65 percent more sensitive to light. The Galaxy Z Flip 4 also benefits from the advanced low-light image processing algorithms with Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 SoC. Both smartphones can shoot 4K videos at up to 60 frames per second from the primary camera and 4K videos at up to 40 frames per second with the front camera. In addition, with Flip 4, Samsung has introduced a new FlexCam feature, where users can hold the device as a camcorder to record videos. The company says FlexCam has been developed in partnership with Meta to provide optimum experience on social media platforms like Instagram, WhatsApp and Facebook.

Other standard features on the Galaxy Z Flip 4 and the Galaxy Z Flip 3 include a side-mounted fingerprint scanner, stereo speakers, USB Type-C 2.0 connectivity, IPX8 water resistance (also found on Galaxy Z Fold 4), and support for 10W wireless charging. The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 4 has four color options: Bora Purple, Graphite, Pink Gold and Blue. Users can also select from a wide variety of models from the Bespoke Edition. Pre-orders for the Galaxy Z Flip 4 are live on the official Samsung website, and the smartphone starts at $999.
