SDCC 2022 Interview: Ant-Man and The Wasp Quantumania Cast

Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania feels like it's just around the corner with a February 2023 release date, but it exists in Phase 5 of the MCU. The third installment in the beloved Ant-Man franchise sees Paul Rudd and Evangeline Lilly return to reprise their roles as the title characters, Scott and Hope - only this time there's a Quantum twist.

Alongside the superhero duo, Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania also features the return of several of their respective family members. Michelle Pfeiffer stars as Hope's mother Janet Van Dyne, Michael Douglas as her father Hank Pym, and Kathryn Newton as Scott's daughter Cassie. With several of them having their own heroic alter egos either in the past or future, saving the day is sure to be a family affair.

While at San Diego Comic-Con, Screen Rant spoke to the Newton and Lilly about what's in store for their characters in Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania and what they hope to see in their MCU future. Watch the videos below and read selected quotes from the interviews!

Hope's mother was trapped in the Quantum realm for most of her life. How does Hope feel exploring it now?

Evangeline Lilly: That is a significant story point for Hope in this film. It definitely brings up a lot of emotion for Hope, knowing that she had lost her mother for so long to this place, and that she really doesn't know anything about it. It's actually a beautiful question that drives to the heart of Hope's struggle and vulnerability in the film.

What did you want to bring to the role of Hope this time around that wasn't necessarily on the page?

Evangeline Lilly: I really wanted to see Hope not always have her s--t together. That's fun to play; a woman that's just like, "I got it," every time. Every time, "I'm never gonna fail. I will never drop this ball." But eventually, it's not relatable - and eventually it actually undermines her strength. Because if you're never vulnerable - if you're never struggling, if you're never scared - then strength is not as heroic anymore.

I wanted little girls who watch her, and women who watch her and look up to the character, to feel like they could relate. That their faults and their mistakes and their shortcomings don't make them less than her; don't make them not heroic. That actually they can overcome their shit too and be as amazing as the Wasp.

How has Cassie's relationship with her father changed since he's been away for five years?

Kathryn Newton: He's been gone, so Cassie had to grow up - or what she thinks is grown up. She's still got a lot of growing to do. I think she is becoming who she's supposed to be, but in doing so - like we all do - we make a lot of mistakes. And that's the beauty of Cassie. She's running really fast, but she's tripping too.

Disney+ series have been quietly growing and building the Young Avengers. What excites you the most about Stature's future?

Kathryn Newton: It would be really great if they did the Young Avengers. I'm a fan of the Young Avengers. I'm a fan of Kate Bishop; I know her and Cassie are supposed to be friends in the comics. I think that would be really exciting. I know Cassie's love story, and it's insane to me that we have Kang in this movie. I'm excited to see the fans' reactions and just find out what the fans want to see.
