Shazam 2's Justice League Makes DC's Henry Cavill Superman Letdown Worse

Comic-Con 2022 saw the release of the first trailer for Shazam! Fury of the Gods, which in a way made the absence of Henry Cavill's Superman worse. In the trailer, Shazam references various superheroes in the DCEU, such as the Flash, Aquaman, and Ben Affleck's Batman. However, Superman was notably missing from the Shazam! Fury of the Gods trailer, which made Henry Cavill not appearing at Comic-Con seem even worse.

Shazam! 2 is the long-awaited sequel to the beloved 2019 film, Shazam!, which follows young child Billy Baston as he gains the ability to turn into an adult superhero. The first trailer reveals some key details about Shazam 2's villains, the Daughters of Atlas, the film's story, and its connection to the wider DCEU. Shazam 2's trailer highlights several references to other DC characters, but also surprisingly features no mention of one of DC's main superheroes, Superman.

On any other day, Shazam 2's trailer not featuring a Superman reference wouldn't mean much. However, given the context of Comic-Con 2022, the trailer's lack of Superman particularly stings. The DCEU has undoubtedly had a rocky couple of years, but many viewers theorized that Comic-Con 2022 would be the year that Henry Cavill finally returns. Credible rumors suggested an appearance from Cavill, but as DC's panel went on, it soon become apparent that no such appearance would occur. If Cavill did show up, it would have explained why Shazam 2 didn't reference Superman: it would have spoiled his return. He seems like an obvious pick for a reference, since Superman has a cameo in the first Shazam!, so the fact that he didn't appear only makes Henry Cavill's DCEU return seem less likely. Shazam 2's trailer not featuring Superman only made his absence at Comic-Con 2022 hurt worse.

What's Going On With Henry Cavill's Superman In The DCEU?

Superman's Cameo in Shazam! mid-credits

Henry Cavill's status in the DCEU has been troubled recently. While his iteration of Superman is in early DCEU films like Man of Steel, and Justice League, his appearances have become less and less frequent. Superman has been referenced and had cameos in projects like Shazam!, and Peacemaker, but they have all been faceless. Superman appeared in Zack Snyder's Justice League, but has no confirmed appearances past that. The reason for Henry Cavill's seeming disappearance has to do with his contract. Due to poor critical and commercial reception, Warner Bros. wanted to slim down DCEU movie budgets, while Henry Cavill wanted higher pay. When renegotiating contracts, a decision couldn't be reached, causing Henry Cavill to exit the DCEU. Since his exit, rumors have been circling discussing his return, and while it seemed that Comic-Con 2022 may have finally been the time, nothing has yet come to fruition.

Shazam 2's trailer would have been the perfect time to confirm that Henry Cavill's Superman still existed in the DCEU, or to have even teased his return. However, the lack of a Superman reference on top of no news on Henry Cavill at Comic-Con just made the whole Superman situation worse. While Shazam! Fury of the Gods is sure to be a great movie, its first trailer just made DC's Superman letdown hurt even more.
