Kraven the Hunter is one of Sony's upcoming projects for its Spider-Man Universe, but disappointing news came out recently about the plot of the film. It was initially reported that Spider-Man will not make an appearance in the upcoming movie and not play a role in telling Kraven's story. This comes across as a huge letdown to potential moviegoers as Kraven is a very iconic foe of Spider-Man in the comics. Having this movie not feature the popular webhead already puts it at a disadvantage before its first trailer release.
Sony's Spider-Man Universe has been hit-or-miss. The lackluster release of Morbius bombed at the box office, despite having a fair 71% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, and only a 16% critic rating. Venom: Let There Be Carnage, on the other hand, did fairly well at almost $507 million on a budget of $110 million, though it was unquestionably not as successful as the first Venom movie. Despite the success of Venom: Let There Be Carnage, Sony is taking huge risks by creating these villainous, anti-hero Spider-Man films without actually having a Spider-Man on screen since Andrew Garfield's The Amazing Spider-Man 2 back in May of 2014. Kraven is a hardcore villain of Spider-Man in the comics, so it is a shame to hear very drastic changes being made to the character in this project.SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

There is no time to fear, though, as Sony can fix this disappointing change with future projects that include the famous web-slinger in its universe. Sony's Spider-Man Universe is building toward The Sinister Six, a group of Spider-Man's greatest villains, with its past few films and connection to the MCU. Kraven happens to be a part of this villainous team in the comics. The end credit scenes of Venom 2 and Morbius indicate the two anti-heroes are connected to the world of the MCU. With the multiverse shattering in Venom: Let There Be Carnage and the Vulture from Spider-Man: Homecoming appearing at the end of Morbius, it is just screaming Sinister Six. There have also been talks of a Spider-Man being implemented into Sony's Spider-Man Universe, which would help develop Kraven into the ruthless and dangerous hunter he is in the comics.
In the comics, there is a storyline called "Kraven's Last Hunt" which focuses on the final battle between Spider-Man and Kraven. It is known to be one of the darkest Spider-Man comics with its harsh violence and death. While this storyline is a build-up of history between the two individuals and would be a difficult project to take on to introduce Kraven, it showcases the anger that catalyzes Kraven into hunting down Spider-Man. By including the friendly neighborhood hero in Sony's Spider-Man Universe, there is a chance for Kraven to go from animal lover to animal killer in the future.
The Sinister Six idea can also bring Aaron Taylor-Johnson's character back to his comic book roots as the hunter who goes after big game. This team of unlikely allies, who originally formed back in the 1960s, come together as they realize they cannot defeat Spider-Man all alone. Kraven, Electro, Doctor Octopus, Mysterio, Sandman, and Vulture are the original Sinister Six, but there are other storylines that include various villains in the ranks. With Kraven, Morbius, Venom, and Vulture being in the Sony Spider-Man Universe, it is likely that this team will form sooner or later, but having an official Spider-Man in that universe would truly make it work better.
Kraven the Hunter is set to release on January 13th, 2023, which is rapidly approaching. Again, Sony's Spider-Man spinoff films tend to be hit or miss, and the initial news of the movie was rather disappointing. Still, this film will be a stepping stone to turn that all around if Spider-Man is included. Hopefully, a trailer will release soon so viewers can get a glimpse of what's to come.
