The Mandalorian Concept Art Reveals Early Look at ROTJ Characters’ Return

Gamorreans take center stage - or arena - in early concept art for The Mandalorian season 2. The Jon Favreau-created Star Wars series, often described as a space western, follows Mandalorian Din Jarin (Pedro Pascal) in a post-Return of the Jedi world in which much of the empire has been defeated, leaving disorganization and power vacuums in its place. The show has a gritty and solemn tone, which is often lightened by the presence of the instantly iconic Grogu, often referred to as "Baby Yoda" by viewers.

The series' road trip format, born of the quest to reunite Grogu with his people, often informs the setting and tone of each episode, with "planet of the week" stories often serving as the format for episodes. In one such episode, Din and Grogu travel to the Outer Rim in search of other Mandalorians. Entitled "The Marshal," the episode served as the season 2 premiere. In the first scene, Din seeks to meet with gangster Gor Koresh in order to interrogate him about the whereabouts of other Mandalorians. His search takes him to a rowdy arena, in which two Gamorreans are seen fighting with vibro-axes for sport.

But what audiences saw wasn't exactly the original plan for the scene. Artist Ryan Church recently shared some early concept art of the fight via Instagram, dubbing the short clip "Gamorrean fight club." See the post below:

The clip shared by Church reveals the Gamorreans as larger-than-life figures, whose raw power is evident. Though the series ultimately went with a more grounded look for the familiar fighters, it's fascinating to see what sort of concept art was considered. Early concept art can often seem more impressive or interesting than what makes it onto screen, which is often due to the practicalities of filming. Despite the perceived Gamorrean downgrade in the episode's final cut, the porcine warriors retained their ROTJ look in "The Marshal," thrilling observant fans that recognized the original trilogy connection.

The Gamorreans, which famously serve as guards for Jabba the Hutt, were one of many easter eggs referencing Boba Fett in the episode where his armor makes its first appearance in the series. "The Marshal" ultimately served as a Boba Fett tease, which paid off in season 2, episode 6, "The Tragedy," when Boba Fett finally made his appearance in The Mandalorian. Boba Fett, as well as the Gamorreans, returned in Emmy-nominated Mandalorian companion series The Book of Boba Fett, with the intimidating fighters serving as Boba's loyal guards in the show. Perhaps more Gamorreans, known for their mercenary work in the Outer Rim, will return in The Mandalorian season 3 or even The Book of Boba Fett season 2. Until then, this concept art provides a fascinating alternate look for the beasts.
