The Most Hated Man On The Internet: Where Is Hunter Moore Now?

Hunter Moore is the reviled subject of Netflix’s new true crime documentary The Most Hated Man on the Internet, and after watching the series, viewers may wonder where the infamous revenge-porn entrepreneur is now. Netflix stumbled upon a goldmine when the streaming service began making true crime documentaries and has not looked back in the years since. In recent years, films and shows focusing on internet crimes have become some of Netflix’s most popular and controversial titles.

As such, it is no surprise that the producers of Don’t F**k with Cats: Hunting an Internet Killer and The Tinder Swindler have returned with another documentary, The Most Hated Man on the Internet. However, viewers who were sad to see that The Tinder Swinder's Simon Leviev isn't in jail might be less disappointed by the new series' story of revenge-porn tycoon Hunter Moore. Unlike Leviev, Moore has faced at least some consequences for his crimes.

In 2010, Hunter Moore set up the website Is Anyone Up? to document his lifestyle. The site was not popular for its first few years but became an overnight sensation when Moore used Is Anyone Up? to share explicit photos of a former sexual partner without their consent. Moore soon encouraged visitors to submit their own intimate images of other people, along with their personal information such as addresses, real names, and phone numbers. This phenomenon would soon become known as revenge porn, but at the time the law did not recognize Moore’s activities as a crime, and Is Anyone Up?’s user-generated content was not considered illegal. Like The Tinder Swindler’s Ponzi scheme, The Most Hated Man on the Internet's subject took advantage of a legal grey area. However, in 2014, the FBI arrested Moore and his collaborator Charles Evens on seven counts of hacking, seven counts of aggravated identity theft, and one count of conspiracy. Moore served two and a half years of a five-year sentence and paid a $2,000 fine.

What Happened To Is Anyone Up?

The Most Hated Man on the Internet Documentary On Netflix

In 2012, anti-bullying activist and entrepreneur James McGibney purchased Is Anyone Up? from Hunter Moore for less than $15,000 with the express intent of shutting down the site. McGibney redirected Is Anyone Up?'s address to his anti-bullying site BullyVille (it now goes to McGibney’s personal site). As seen in the Netflix true crime documentary The Most Hated Man on the Internet, McGibney’s purchase of the site took Is Anyone Up?’s content offline, meaning that the site’s photos of nude individuals — some of whom were disabled, blind, paraplegic, or elderly, or were photographed in the hospital after surgery — were all removed from the domain.

McGibney’s intervention led to Moore’s site being taken down, but few victims of his massive worldwide revenge porn ring received much in the way of restorative justice. Some of the photos found on Is Anyone Up? are still thought to be available online, hosted by other sites, while Moore himself has self-published a memoir since his 2017 release from prison. Moore can no longer be found online, having deleted his social media presence around the time of his 2014 arrest. Unlike Luka Magnotta, the killer that Don’t F**k with Cats documents, however, Hunter Moore, the so-called “revenge porn king” profiled in The Most Hated Man on the Internet did not face many consequences for his actions outside of his brief prison sentence.
