Thor: Love & Thunder Fans Defend Valkyrie Amid MCU Film’s Mixed Reviews

Thor: Love and Thunder fans are taking to social media to defend Tessa Thompson's Valkyrie after the MCU film's mixed reviews. The fourth standalone Thor film overall, Thor: Love and Thunder once more sees star Chris Hemsworth re-team with writer/ director Taika Waititi after 2017's Thor: Ragnarok. The latest film has divided both fans and critics and follows Thor as he assembles a team of heroes, including his ex-girlfriend, Jane (aka Mighty Thor), to defeat a new threat in the form of Christian Bale's Gorr the God Butcher.

After first being introduced in Thor: Ragnarok, Thompson's Valkyrie is back once more for Thor: Love and Thunder. At the end of Avengers: Endgame, Valkyrie was appointed the King of New Asgard on Earth, a position she still holds in the latest Thor adventure. Much to the delight of many fans, the character plays a more prominent role this time around, acting as a strong ally to both Thor and Mighty Thor, while still retaining some of the vices and comedic personality traits she had in Thor: Ragnarok.

Considering the character's popularity and the success of Loki, a show based on Tom Hiddleston's titular character from the Thor universe, a Valkyrie Disney+ show has the potential to be a hit. As one of the MCU's few openly LGBTQ+ characters, Valkyrie is also an important figure in terms of representation, something that Marvel continues to struggle with. There wasn't really room to fit a Valkyrie romantic subplot in Thor: Love and Thunder considering she's more of a secondary character but, as one of the tweets suggests, there might be interest in a Disney+ series that explores a potential romance between her character and Jamie Alexander's Lady Sif.

Waititi's latest MCU venture hasn't earned the same positive critical and fan response as Thor: Ragnarok, but parts of the film are evidently striking a chord with many Marvel fans. Valkyrie's future in the MCU remains somewhat uncertain at the end of Thor: Love and Thunder, but the door seems to have been left open for further adventures down the line, either in the form of a solo film, a Disney+ series, or once more as a supporting character. Regardless of how and when Valkyrie returns after Thor: Love and Thunder, it's clear that many fans aren't ready to be done with the character just yet.
