Why Spider-Man’s She-Hulk Snub Is Actually A Good Thing

She-Hulk is the latest hero joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe through her own TV show, which will count on the presence of some well-established characters, though not Spider-Man, as the writers wanted – but that’s actually a good thing. The MCU continues its expansion but not just on the big screen, as it’s now also branching out to TV/streaming with a long list of TV shows that connect to this universe’s movie side. This has allowed the MCU to introduce more characters, and among the newest ones joining this connected universe is Jennifer Walters/She-Hulk.

Played by Tatiana Maslany, Jennifer Walters will make her MCU debut in the TV series She-Hulk: Attorney at Law, and she’s a lawyer specializing in cases involving superhumans – however, she also becomes the green superhero She-Hulk, just like her famous cousin, Bruce Banner (Mark Ruffalo). She-Hulk will follow Jennifer as she navigates life and dating in her 30s while also embracing her She-Hulk persona. Jennifer will come across some interesting characters in her TV show, such as Titania (Jameela Jamil), a social media influencer obsessed with She-Hulk, and Mallory Book (Renée Elise Goldsberry), a lawyer and rival of Jennifer.

She-Hulk will also count on the presence of other, well-known MCU characters that will further help connect Jennifer and company to the rest of this universe, such as her cousin, Bruce/Smart Hulk, Emil Blonsky/Abomination (Tim Roth), Wong (Benedict Wong), and Matt Murdock/Daredevil (Charlie Cox) in his second MCU appearance after his cameo in Spider-Man: No Way Home. However, these aren’t the only characters that the writers of She-Hulk wanted in the series, and among those was Spider-Man, but he’s completely off-limits, and that’s a good thing for Jennifer.

She-Hulk Already Risks Having Too Many Other MCU Characters

As mentioned above, She-Hulk is already featuring four already established MCU characters, and even though it’s unknown how big or small their roles are, the show is already at risk of having too many characters. Smart Hulk was an obvious addition given his link to She-Hulk, while Blonsky will be one of Walters’ clients, Daredevil is a fellow lawyer and hero, and Wong came across Abomination not long ago (and he has served as the glue of most of the MCU’s Phase 4 so far). Adding Spider-Man to the mix would have taken the attention away from She-Hulk, which is already a potential risk with the confirmed characters, and the show has to find room for She-Hulk as this is her MCU introduction, and she needs to connect with the audience.

Will She-Hulk & Spider-Man Ever Meet In The MCU?

Although they might seem like an odd pair, She-Hulk and Spider-Man have a couple of links in the comics. She-Hulk was married to John Jameson, son of Peter Parker’s boss at the Daily Bugle, J. Jonah Jameson, and she teamed up with Spider-Man on different occasions. However, She-Hulk and Spider-Man meeting in the MCU will depend on what Sony and Marvel have planned for Spidey’s future, as he’s set to return, but there have been no updates on Spider-Man 4 and beyond. While it’s not unlikely that they will meet at some point, for now, She-Hulk will go on adventures on her own side of the MCU while Spider-Man continues on his own.
